Crown Lengthening

A crown lengthening procedure involves removing gum tissue, bone, or both to expose more of a natural tooth. It can be done for therapeutic or cosmetic reasons. This treatment will expose more of the natural tooth structure, and it might be considered for several varied reasons.

The perception of a healthy smile is often associated with straight, white teeth. A stellar smile really begins with healthy gums. When we envision an impressive smile, usually it seems to be about the shape of the teeth, their color, and proper alignment. Overlooked is the role our gums contribute to our smile as well. If you unintentionally reveal too much gum when you smile, it can make your face seem longer or make your teeth look smaller. The proportions of your teeth and gums can be corrected to provide a more uniform and balanced smile.

The entire team at Missouri River Dental is committed to providing a patient experience unlike any other. The foundation of that philosophy is our personable and professional staff. We collectively strive to blend technology, art, and healthcare for each patient. Our goal is to provide you with an individualized patient experience unlike any other you have had at a dental office. We strive to create a positive and comfortable atmosphere for our patients while still meeting their dental needs, wishes, and exceeding expectations. Call us today at 701-751-7177 or enter your request online to schedule an appointment for your evaluation regarding the benefits of a crown lengthening procedure for you. You can conveniently find Missouri River Dental at 1600 Uptown Lane, Bismarck, ND, 58503.

Benefits from Crown Lengthening

If you do not like the appearance of your gummy smile you might be a candidate for this treatment. An excessive development of gum tissue or an uneven gumline can have a negative effect on your smile. Our professionally trained team can reshape, or gum contour, your gum line to shorten the excess gum tissue and therefore increase the length of your teeth. Here are a few other restoration reasons:

  • Your gumline extends too far along your tooth for it to receive the needed restorative treatment.
  • Your tooth has broken off at the gumline.
  • A crown or filling has fallen off, and there is decay underneath.
  • Your tooth structure is not strong enough for a restoration.

Another reason a gummy smile happens is when you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles of this part of your mouth will pull the upper lip higher than where it should be normally. While this does affect not mean you have a gummy smile, it can give the perception that you do. This can also be treated with a crown lengthening procedure.

A gummy smile can also a result of how your jawbone developed. If your upper jawbone bulges out more than it should, it can appear like a gummy smile. This is not something that could have been initially prevented, but it can cause an improper bite and affect your long-term health.

The Crown Lengthening Procedure

The detail conscious team at Missouri River Dental will examine your smile first to document the amount of the gum tissue and to identify the balance or proportions of teeth to gum to ratio during your smile. A digital or traditional form of an impression can also be taken to determine the specific details per tooth. X-rays will also identify the condition of your roots and bones below the surface of your gums. This examination is necessary to protect your oral health and you confirm that you have enough healthy jawbone and tooth roots for the procedure to be performed. Detailed planning delivers favorable results.

Missouri River Dental will perform your crown lengthening after the administration of a local anesthetic or an additional dental sedation if beneficial. The actual length of time needed for your crown lengthening procedure will depend on how many teeth are being addressed and whether any other bones need to be removed. It will also vary on whether we use a dental laser for the treatment or a surgical scalpel. After we have reached an aesthetically pleasing crown length, the treated area is cleaned, restored, and the procedure is completed.

If laser therapy is used for your treatment, it is pointed directly at the excess gums to be removed. The laser does not produce any heat or vibration, making it an easy, comfortable, and painless treatment. The laser also seals the blood vessels immediately resulting in less bleeding and swelling.

If a surgical scalpel is used, sutures are used to close the gingival tissue around the tooth, and a band-aid material is placed around the tooth to allow this tissue to heal. The crown lengthening treatment can be done at Missouri River Dental in a matter of minutes with a laser and a little longer with a surgical scalpel.

Crown Lengthening Aftercare

Full crown lengthening recovery might take several days after a laser treatment and up to a few months for a more extensive procedure. You can begin eating soft foods and returning to work the day after your crown lengthening procedure. You should avoid strenuous activity for two to three days.

During your crown lengthening recovery, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to treat your surgery site. Once the anesthesia wears off, you might feel some discomfort and we can prescribe pain relievers and a specialized chlorhexidine mouth rinse, depending on the intensity of your procedure. It will be advised to follow a soft diet for the first few days to allow for proper healing. You can use an ice pack for the first few days, if necessary, and need to avoid hot foods and monitor the dressing if we included this. We will also council you on brushing and flossing during your healing period.
