dental implants help to preserve the integrity of your jawbone density and save your jawbone from atrophy

Implant supported dentures are becoming a popular restoration that combines two prior solutions into one successful option.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures are becoming a popular restoration that combines two prior solutions into one successful option. A traditional denture is designed to sit snuggly on your gums and is secured in place with dental adhesive. Implant supported dentures can now be your restoration solution if you are missing your teeth and have sufficient jawbone density to support the implants. With the dental implants surgically placed into your jawbone, they are now used to support, secure, and stabilize the dentures. Implant supported dentures have special clips that snap onto attachments on the implant posts.

The entire team at Missouri River Dental is committed to providing a patient experience unlike any other. The foundation of that philosophy is our personable and professional staff. We collectively strive to blend technology, art, and healthcare for each patient. Our goal is to provide you with an individualized patient experience unlike any other you have had at a dental office. We strive to create a positive and comfortable atmosphere for our patients while still meeting their dental needs, wishes, and exceeding expectations. Call us today at 701-751-7177 or enter your request online to schedule an appointment for your evaluation regarding the benefits of implant supported dentures for you. You can conveniently find Missouri River Dental at 1600 Uptown Lane, Bismarck, ND, 58503.

You can have implant supported dentures placed in either your upper or lower jaw. You still need to remove your implant supported dentures daily to clean the appliance and the gums beneath. It is advised to not sleep with the implant supported dentures at night. You may consider having permanent crown and bridgework that cannot be removed. Missouri River Dental will review your restoration options with you after an evaluation.

Benefits with Implant Supported Dentures

There are benefits associated with implant supported dentures in comparison to traditional dentures. Here are a few for you to consider when deciding if this is the correct option for your situation and your lifestyle.

  • Implant supported dentures are considered more natural looking than traditional dentures.
  • Compared with conventional dentures, implant supported dentures fit better and are more comfortable. There is far less friction on the gums from with the implant supported denture, therefore fewer if any sores.
  • Implant supported dentures are far more stable and secure than traditional dentures. They will not become loose while you are speaking.
  • Implant supported dentures also improve your biting and chewing ability. You will be able to eat harder and stickier foods. The implants deliver pressure and temperature sensations to the jawbone and nerves.
  • The integrity of your jawbone is preserved, and any further bone atrophy is prevented.

How Implant Supported Dentures Function

There are two types of implant supported dentures: bar-retained and ball-retained. With both versions, the denture appliance will be created of an acrylic base that will look like your natural gums. Porcelain, ceramic, or acrylic crowns simulating your natural teeth are attached to this base. Both methods of dentures need a minimum of two implants for proper support.

  • Bar-retained dentures — A thin metal bar following the curve of your arch is attached to two to five implants that have been placed. Clips are fitted to the bar, the denture or both. The denture then fits directly over this bar and is securely clipped into place with attachments.
  • Ball-retained dentures — Each implant has a metal attachment on the end that is ball shaped. These ball shaped attachments then snap directly into a female nylon socket on the backside of the denture base.

The Implant Supported Dentures Process

During your initial exam and consultation, the detail-conscious team at Missouri River Dental will review your medical and dental histories, take X-rays, and create impressions of your gums so that a model can be created. We might add a computed tomography (CT) scan of your mouth. This will show us the location of your sinuses and nerves above your upper arch. It will help guide us to make sure they will not be affected with the placement of the implants. A CT scan will also confirm the jawbone density, and to pinpoint the perfect locations for the implants. If you are not currently wearing dentures, we will make you one and use this temporary denture until your implant supported dentures are placed.

From this temporary denture, we can also confirm the ideal position for artificial crowns in your permanent denture. When the temporary denture is done, we can also use a copy of it as a surgical guide to direct the implants into the exact positions. It may take about four appointments for the entire completion.

We will now administer a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area for implant placements. Then we will create small incisions to surgically place each tiny titanium post into your jawbone. We will close the sites with sutures.

Missouri River Dental will wait several months to allow the jawbone and the implants to integrate or attach and fuse together.

After X-rays confirm that the implants have become fused with the jawbone, the next minor surgery is scheduled. This surgery is quite simple. A small incision is made to expose the tops of the posts. We then attach an abutment or extension to the titanium post, so it now reaches the surface of your gumline. There is minimal gum healing and then we can make the final impression of your gums and the abutments. This is the guide for the final denture framework, either ball or bar, specific locations.

With the final denture now created, we might have some minor adjustments at your final fitting for either a bar-retained or a ball-retained final implant supported denture.
