while it might take several weeks to receive a traditional dental crown, a cerec crown uses cad/cam, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing, to create your crown in just one single appointment.

A dental crown is placed over a tooth to cover and protect the tooth and to restore its size and shape, strength, functionality, and improve its appearance.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is placed over a tooth to cover and protect the tooth and to restore its size and shape, strength, functionality, and improve its appearance. A crown is a protective cap for a damaged tooth. When cemented into place the dental crown fully encases the entire visible part of the tooth above the gum line.

When we examine the crown of a tooth, we are referring to the visible surface of that tooth that is visible above the gumline. When this part of the tooth is damaged, a dental crown is a custom cover that placed on the tooth to help protect the remaining natural structure. Crowns are shaded to match the color of your teeth and can be created using a variety of varied materials such as porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, metal, composite resin, or a combination of materials.

Missouri River Dental will recommend considering a dental crown if your tooth is damaged by cracking, decay, or a significant fracture. Dental crowns can also be used to cosmetically improve the visual appearance of an unsightly tooth or to protect weak areas of a tooth.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can be beneficial if you are in one of these following situations:

  • To restore a broken tooth or a tooth that has been worn down.
  • To protect a weak tooth from decay, or to hold together a cracked tooth.
  • To protect a tooth with a large filling when there is not much tooth left.
  • To cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth.
  • To finish a dental implant restoration.
  • To make a cosmetic improvement.
  • To serve as abutment support for a dental bridge.

For your youngster, a dental crown can be used on primary, baby teeth to:

  • Save a tooth that has been damaged by decay and if it cannot support a filling.
  • Protect a tooth at elevated risk, especially if your child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.
  • Minimize the frequency of anesthesia for a child unable to fully cooperate with the requirements of proper dental care because of age, behavior, or medical history.

The Different Materials Used for Dental Crowns

Various kinds of materials can be used in dental crowns, including:

  • porcelain
  • ceramic
  • zirconia
  • metal
  • composite resin
  • a combination of materials

For example, you could have a porcelain crown that is fused to metal, as opposed to an all-porcelain crown.

When selecting the material for your crown, Missouri River Dental will consider these factors:

  • How much of the tooth will be visible when you smile?
  • The location and size of the tooth.
  • The function of the tooth that needs the crown.
  • The position and condition of your gum tissue.
  • How much of the natural tooth is remaining?
  • The color of the surrounding teeth.

You can also discuss with our team if you have a personal preference.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The process for a dental crown usually requires two visits, the first appointment includes examining and preparing the tooth, the second visit is the placement of the permanent crown.

At the first visit to prepare for your crown, we will take X-rays to examine the roots of the tooth receiving the crown and the surrounding bone. If the tooth has extensive decay or if there is an increased risk of the tooth's pulp becoming infected, a root canal treatment performed first might be best prior to the crown being placed.

Before we begin prepping the tooth, Missouri River Dental will administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the tissue immediately surrounding the tooth. Then the tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown. The amount of enamel removed will depend on the type of crown chosen. If a large part of the tooth is missing from decay or damage, we might need to use filling material to build up the tooth to then support the crown.

After reshaping the tooth, we will next make an impression of the tooth. Sometimes this impression can be captured with a digital scanner. Impressions of the teeth around the tooth also need be made to make sure that the crown will not alter your bite. If the crown is to be created of porcelain, we can also select the shade that will match the color of your neighboring teeth.

The impressions or scans are then sent to a dental lab where the crown will be crafted. The crown is usually completed in a few weeks. At the first visit we will add a temporary crown to cover and protect the tooth while the final crown is being made. Temporary crowns are made of acrylic and are secured with a temporary cement.

At the second visit, Missouri River Dental will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. If everything meets our approval, a local anesthetic may be administered again, and the new crown is permanently cemented in place.
